Tackling Poverty

Local unemployment has almost halved since 2010. The best way to help people out of poverty is to support them off benefits and into work, which is why I am working hard to attract more jobs in our area.

I’m also working to make sure that we have the right support in place to help those suffering the demoralising effects of personal debt and poverty get their lives back on an even keel.

I recently held a meeting with local charities and other agencies to discuss the problem of personal debt and over the last five years have championed the work of local charities like Homestart, who provide support to parents and early years intervention.

I also welcome and support the Government's commitment to providing 15 hours a week of free childcare to all 3 and 4 year olds. The evidence is very clear that the first three years of a child's life have a huge impact and if re-elected, I will campaign for a further extension of childcare and more early years support.
